Welcome to California Hotel

California Hotel sits at the heart of San Francisco’s vibrant 910 Geary Street, offering visitors a genuine taste of the city’s eclectic spirit. With a rating of 3.5 stars, this hotel blends affordability with a distinctive local charm that resonates through its modest yet characterful rooms. While the accommodations can feel compact, they carry a sense of place often missing in larger, impersonal chains.

Guests appreciate the hotel’s strategic location—steps away from diverse eateries, vintage architecture, and bustling nightlife, including live music venues like The Masonic. The neighborhood pulses with energy, offering an immersive experience that extends beyond the hotel’s walls. Practical amenities such as free Wi-Fi, available parking, and nearby public transportation add layers of convenience for travelers.

The California Hotel’s recent transformation into the Pineapple Hotel has infused new life into its public spaces. The redesigned lobby, enlivened by a piano and inviting café, creates a warm, social atmosphere perfect for relaxing with a coffee or drink. Friendly and attentive staff enhance the welcoming vibe, reflecting a commitment to guest satisfaction that softens the building’s modest bones.

While some guests note the absence of on-site dining and a pool, the hotel’s surrounding neighborhood compensates with an array of global dining options and local shops. Practical benefits like close proximity to grocery stores, coin laundries, and even a high-class emergency hospital make it a sensible base for longer stays. For travelers seeking a budget-conscious stay that doesn’t sacrifice authenticity, California Hotel stands out as a wise, unpretentious choice in San Francisco’s diverse landscape.

Stayed here with my wife in June 2010 for a weekend. The room was comfortable but very small and cramped. I remember watching game 7 of the NBA Finals, when the Lakers beat the Celtics.

the rooms are modest, but they feel appropriate to San Francisco, as opposed to some super generic white-washed could-be-anywhere hotel.

I recommend it if you're going for a cheap place, despite it not being the cheapest of them all, it's up there. Rooms are alright - at first, we did not have blankets, but the staff is really friendly and I could sort out a lot of things with them. They're open to many things, nice people overall personally. There's no wi-fi, which is a minus, but you can always buy 30 days of xfinity wi-fi for $20 and have quite good internet from anywhere in San Francisco. Still, this is my first time seeing a hotel without wi-fi. Receptionists are amazing people, friendly and prompt. Rates are decent considering the conditions. Long stays are possible. For location, it has a bus station in front of the door, but this street in particular has many homeless people around.
